Digital Storytelling for Pre-Service Teachers
Ultimate Goal - create a digital story and be able to explain the value of digital storytelling in education.
Introduction:Let's get started with a broad "digital storytelling" definition! The definition has gotten broader over time but simply, it's presenting information/telling a story using digital tools. Animations, video, slideshows, interactive media and much more can be used for kids and teachers to engage an audience by sharing and publishing information digitally.

Now it's your turn!
Create a 2-3 minute digital story that could be used educationally. Maybe your story is a model/example that you will use to show students what they will be creating. Maybe your story is going to introduce a concept, book, historical time period, etc. to your students. What other ideas do you have? (The grading rubric for the digital story is available on Moodle.)
After your story is produced, you will be pitching it to the team at Discovery Education. The company has given you 5 minutes to explain how your video and ideas would enhance their website. Discovery Education has an online video subscription service available in many school districts. Discovery Ed videos often include lesson plans, quizzes for students, interactive project ideas, etc. So in your pitch, you will want to show off your video and explain some ideas for how teachers can use it. (The grading rubric for the Discovery Education rubric is available on Moodle.)

Getting an Idea
- What is the most important concept you have learned about teaching?
- What is the most important concept you have learned in school?
- What is the most important concept you learned in elementary school/first grade/high school/etc.?
- What has been the hardest concept/most difficult lesson for you to learn?
- What is the last thing you cried about?
- What is the last thing you got really excited about?
Planning
- Try a storyboard at StoryBoard That! http://www.storyboardthat.com or use your own mapping/bulleting/scripting technique. Here's the Lightning Laura storyboard.
- After the general plan is ready - "pitch" your plan to someone else. When you are listening to a pitch, think about:
- Add peer ideas to your plan and be sure you have thought about what kind of media you will use - draw pictures on the plan or make annotations.
