Our summer reading group: "What are they really reading?" is at it again. We are reading popular, YA fiction to pull us out of our academic foci and let us think about the students who are coming to us. We started with a discussion of Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl a book we generally enjoyed (although one dude in our group couldn't bring himself to buy/checkout the book due to the girliness). However, there is great insight into a population of high school students and undergraduate students that led to a strong conversation about teens and all the things they can have going on behind the scenes.
Our 2nd book was Amulet by Kazu Kibuishi - a fun graphic novel full of adventure (if a bit thin on the story). We decided that the book was more of a graphic novella. Too developed for a comic book but not developed enough for our colloquial definition of a graphic novel. The book is on the younger side of YA but could be very appealing to kids looking for video game like excitement in their reading
Coming up next: The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey.
