Some of my favorite YA and crossover books from this year have included The Talk-Funny Girl, Ready Player One and Cinder. If you are at NCSU in the College of Ed, you can check out The Talk-Funny Girl and Ready Player One from Overdrive.
All three books are engaging with strong teen characters. The Talk-Funny Girl is the most serious/touching of the bunch with an important message about survival and finding strength in self and in community. Ready Player One and Cinder have some great moments of adventure, sci-fi and humor. Both take the reader to a future society (dystopia light) where things have gone wrong but aren't taken too seriously.
Ready Player One is too much fun if you are a child of or lover of the 80s - great throwback references to all forms of media (video games, music, tv shows, etc) from the 1980s that will have your relishing the past. Cinder is one of the many fractured fairy tales using the basic Cinderella tale but it twists and turns and throws in nice global society connections as well as a more extreme version of the evil stepmother (forget losing your shoe - how about losing your foot).
